The University of Victoria Vikes compete in the elite category, usually after the open categories have already raced, so the elite racers can have an audience and the audience gets to watch fast racing!
The Vikes have one of the very best teams in Canada in both the men’s and women’s categories, perennially ranked top-3 nationally. Pictured here are Kyle Irvine, former Vike Cliff Childs and Trinity Western University’s Joel Deshiffart.
Martha McNeely, pictured here, was the winner of the 2012 Maurice Tarrant Performance Award, as voted by her peers.
The Maurice Tarrant Performance Award was for either gender for the first three years that the series ran. For the fourth year, in 2013 a new award was created, the women’s equivalent:
Named after Marcia Stromsmoe: The Marcia Stromsmoe Performance Award, which went to Marilyn Arsenault, mostly from the result of achieving the Canadian 40-44 age group record in the 10,000m distance with her 34:28 finishing time at The Q’s Victoria Run Series BC 10000m Championships, August 31st 2013.
Wendy Davies is a long-time, age-group dominant runner from Victoria, who still owns school-age track records from the 1970s.
The member of the 800-plus member-strong Prairie Inn Harriers Running Club, is a consistent participant in the series’ events; pictured here, she won her age-group at the inaugural 2013 Spinnakers BrewPub 5k.
The course starts in front of the Pacific Institute of Sport Excellence (PISE) and meanders through Camosun College and Vancouver Island Technology Park properties. The course is on a double out-and-back route.
Test Post: The Oxland, Deshiffarts and the Bassetts are three sets of talented runner-siblings that are from Nanaimo, the Deshiffart’s older brother Joel attends Trinity Western University, the Bassetts have graduation, while the Oxland’s brother is on the University of Victoria Vikes team.
Julien Marceau has competed in all four season of The Q’s Victoria Run Series – previously The Q’s Victoria Track Series.
Each year he has ran faster than the previous. He likes to race in all distances from 400m to 5000m on the track, as well as the 10k, half-marathon distances on the road and has raced the marathon a few times.
Here he is sporting the stylish “FR” logo on his race singlet, which is a gold sponsor of The Q’s Victoria Run Series and they are Frontrunners Westshore. Marceau also races for Performance Running.
